Welcome again to my “blog” which aims to be a one stop shop for N.E. gigs including folk and roots gigs through my podcast and blog/gig guide as well as through regular tweets and postings on Facebook.
Thank you to all those artists and venues over the last month who have responded so enthusiastically to this venture as well as providing useful feedback. As from this month as promised the gig guide will still have a listings element to it, but the descriptions will be briefer and there will be more audio/video content. Northeast artists of the month :Tyde
Tyde are Seth Tinsley, guitar and vocals, Heather Gessey (fiddle/vocals) and Andrew Waite (accordion). They are from the Tynedale area and play dynamic contemporary folk. I have seen them in concert. It was at the launch of their first album, a couple of years ago: a memorable night at Queen's Hall in Hexham. I went away with a copy of the CD, a smile on my face and a spring in my step...see what you think! “Pied Flycatcher” (EP)
Kate Doubleday is a young Welsh folk singer who has a deep love of nature. She is also a freelance community organic gardener and a supporter of the Wildlife Trusts. This is reflected in the content of this charming EP, named after the Pied Flycatcher, this tail wagging summer visitor to western shores of the U.K including Wales. Read more about the pied flycatcher in the link at the bottom of this review.
Kate according to her bio (link to her website at the end of the review) used to drive her Dad crazy singing as a youngster in the car. She didn’t give up on this habit and I am glad she didn’t. Whilst not possessing her father’s then vehicle a Scimitar, the EP and her voice transformed my journey to work in my Polo, with the music’s sense of open skies; the awe, wonder and innate spirituality of nature; and a sense of the lightness of the aerial gymnastics that skittish little birds perform when on the wing.
Prior to even playing the CD my senses were soothed by the artwork on the beautifully simple and eco-friendly cardboard sleeve, where there is a very soft calming portrait on one of our feathered friends that likes to summer in West Wales by artist Virginia Head. So my expectations were raised by the packaging alone!
I confess that from the first notes of the title track, which commences the EP of three tracks, I was utterly beguiled. Kate’s delicate yet strong vocal created in my head an image of this little bird in flight and the purity and simplicity of the song, indeed every song on the EP , left me feeling sooo much better.
“The Dunes”, which occupies the middle of the EP, is ushered in by a light as a feather flute (played by Kate), gently plucked kora and the paper lightness of Kate’s voice. The kora incidentally is played by leading UK and Birmingham based kora player Dan Wilkins. The chorus of “Ha-de-lay-i-oh…” and so on (I hope I spelt that correctly) hints for me at the fun and lightness of spirit which nature brings and Kate clearly feels get this cross very effectively.
“Freefalling” (track 3) relates to Kate’s deep love of nature and her need to be out in amidst it. The song ripples like a refreshing stream, whilst the backing vocalists impart a sense of the ethereal that is our green environment.
If you are stuck in a concrete jungle and feeling weighed down by a lack of green, get this EP and it will take you to another place. If you can see a beautiful natural view out of your window, the music I think will affirm what you already probably feel if you love nature. Anyway, I’m off to spend some looking at the birds in my garden now I need nature!
