Roots of the World Blog October 2012

Welcome once again to my blog which is about the very best in World, Roots and Folk Music!

Thanks to all of you for supporting this venture, and for spreading the word supporting world/roots/folk music and especially north-east England acts, venues and promoters…these are lean times as we all know. This venture aims to act as an umbrella for all the venues, promoters, acts, gig goers, CD and download buyers of roots music especially but not exclusively in north-east England. It hopes to make all those connected to roots music in whatever way in the northeast to work together to support roots music better…and to you who were already doing this before I started this thank you for your work so far. I hope I end up complementing your well.

Apologies to local musician Jez Lowe, it was intended he would be this month’s featured local artist. However, due to his CDs temporarily going AWOL in the RootsoftheWorld vaults this has not been possible. Jez will be found and rightfully put on this podcast asap! In the meantime catch up with Jez at:

Newcastle Roots Music Radio:

Sponsored by the Brandling Villa Pub, South Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne and licensed by the PRS, License Number LE-0006074.

3rd edition now out on Soundcloud and now on Podomatic at :

.-so you can now catch Newcastle Roots Music Radio in your podcatching software!  I am hoping to get it onto I Tunes in the next week or so, -so keep checking-  but this is a hobby, albeit a passionate one and so has to be fitted around the day job, so that development may take a wee while as I know uploading podcasts to the I Tunes store can be problematic! Some of my self-confessed non tech savvy friends have expressed some anxiety about accessing this podcast. Just follow the link and click play. If you don’t like something then drag the cursor on the programme to where you do (hopefully!). If you can’t listen to it on the computer, or haven’t got the time to, download and burn to CD and play it in the car (needs to have an “MP3” CD player currently) or other MP3 player…you might be surprised at what you have in the house that will play MP3 format CDs (I realise some of you will be saying “What’s the difficulty with accessing it on the PC?”…but we are at different points on our tech journey!).

What is in the RootsoftheWorld shopping basket this month?

These lovelies are:

Krar Collective: “Ethiopia Super Krar”: Modern Ethiopian Roots from band that rocked Sage Hall 2!

“Bande Italiane” (Compilation): Compilation celebrating the tradition of the Italian town band…it’s a brilliant album that will have you dancing!:

Kathryn Tickell: “Northumbrian Voices”: Kathryn brings together interviews, her dad, and herself and band to take us into Northumbria’s musical traditions as seen and experienced by her and her family and where real life is always present:

Chastity Brown:”Back Road Highways”: Gritty, rootsy, twangy guitar bluesy, husky and ethereal ..kinda hard to pin down but I like it:

Outside Track: “Flash Company”: This young Celtic combo put their Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton and Vancouver backgrounds to good use in this lively, beautifully crafted and thoroughly enjoyable album..great in the car!:
